Iron supplement prescriptions

Recent research shows that after taking one dose of iron, your body’s absorption of any further doses in that 24-hour period is reduced. This means that taking iron more than once a day does not help to replace your iron stores any faster. It also increases the risk of side effects, such as abdominal upset and constipation.

In light of the above, we now recommend that iron is taken once a day. If you are being prescribed iron tablets more than once a day, please contact the practice so that we can amend your prescription.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with one of our practice pharmacists. If you continue experiencing side effects on one iron tablet a day, please also contact the practice pharmacist, as we can safely reduce your dosage further.
